Early Career Conference on Education, Inequalities and Democracy

On 23 June 2025, the University of Roehampton will host the Early Career Conference on Education, Inequalities and Democracy—a one-day event designed to bring together emerging scholars and senior academics from across Europe.
The conference will feature 44 early career researchers presenting cutting-edge work that explores the complex links between education, inequality, and democracy. With a strong focus on interdisciplinary and international perspectives, discussions will span six core themes:
Educational Policy for Equity & Inclusion
Gender Empowerment in the Classroom
Education and Social Justice
Voices from the Margin
Inequality in Education
Democracy and Educational Futures
A major highlight will be keynote presentations by two leading scholars in the field:
Professor Bryony Hoskins will deliver a keynote titled “Girls’ Empowerment through Politics in the Classroom,” drawing on her extensive research into political engagement and democratic learning.
Dr Adrian Arellano will present “The Education for Democracy Index: Measuring and Assessing the Democratic Performance of Education Systems,” offering insights into the development of the EfDI and what it reveals about the state of civic education globally.
The conference will also mark the official launch of the new Research Centre on Education, Inequalities and Democracy at Roehampton, directed by Professor Hoskins. The centre will serve as a hub for innovative, interdisciplinary research aimed at strengthening democratic engagement and reducing inequalities through education.
The event is supported by the Faculty of Business and Law, the School of Education, and the G-EPIC and STRIDE research projects.
